College of Medicine staff member goes from cardiac arrest patient to CPR advocate

In April 2020, Steve Ryan, a software engineer for the Southeastern National Tuberculosis Center in the UF College of Medicine’s Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Medicine, experienced sudden cardiac arrest that stopped his heart for 12 minutes. His 15-year-old daughter, Kaitlin Ryan, called 911 and helped save his life by administering CPR.

Ryan and his family are now raising awareness about sudden cardiac arrest and the importance of CPR.
